Postgraduate Program

I am always on the lookout for motivated, sharp and hard-working students who have a passion for rivers and floodplains, and want to understand what makes them tick and how we can better manage them.

By applying to work with me, you will have the opportunity to join an enthusiastic group that can play hard and work even harder!

What can you expect from me?

It is my responsibility as a supervisor to provide you with the resources and professional connections to meet your career goals.

The needs of postgraduate students are not the same, so I do not supervise all students the same way.  Working together, we find the right balance and pathway forward.

It is my role to make you a complete river scientist with those scientific and communication skills required for a successful and rewarding career in academia, government, NGOs, consulting, or whatever you want to be.

Typically, I form a supervisory team and there can be strong industry links that best suit students.

What can I expect from you?

I expect you to be passionate and hardworking about your research.

You are encouraged to publish your work in peer-reviewed journals, deliver presentations at local and national meetings, interact with other river scientists, and enjoy yourself doing it.

While I do not expect your postgraduate research to consume every aspect of your life, the work can involve a number of sacrifices. I expect you to be committed to and excited about your work.

MT Postgraduate Quote.jpg

“Martin constantly encouraged me to think about the bigger implications of what I was doing, and ask what I’ve come to realise is one of the most important questions when doing science: “So what?” I think that’s one of the most valuable lessons he taught me. I have no doubt that without Martin I would not have the international research experience I have today, nor would I be where I am today.”
